I got a text from an old friend of mine today. Walking home from the grocery my phone pinged and I saw a friendly greeting from her. I was thrilled, I hadn’t seen or talked to her in ages. When she said she was in trouble my first thoughts were of how I could help. Was it trouble at home? Did she need someplace to stay? She could have my couch, my support, whatever she needed. The conversation continued as she told a story of being mugged in London, now stranded and needing help. Odd, I thought, as she has a great family and friends. Odd that she would get in touch with me after so long in her time of “dire need”.

It took only a few more messages for me to understand what was going on. She needed money to get out of London. This is when I knew it was bullshit. I’ll admit I was careful, I didn’t want to hurt her feelings if somehow this WAS her, but after a couple of really basic questions I knew someone had gotten a hold of her account and was using it to try to scam me. Too bad I’m not dumb or rich enough to just wire money to friends from long ago.

I ended the conversation, telling the person on the other end that I would be reporting the account as stolen and being used for fraud. No harm done, no numbers exchanged, no threats, only desperate “why are you doing this to me” texts asking how I could be such a horrible friend.

It was a laughable attempt in some ways, but I’ll admit they had me for just a moment, worried about my friend, wanting to help. When I stopped the texts I was actually a little shaken. It is certainly a bit dramatic but it was like a mugging attempt to a certain degree and it just unsettled me.

These scams happen on a regular basis, just hadn’t happened to me yet. I’m glad that they decided I was the mark, I hope no one was taken in by it.

I’m glad I didn’t offer my couch…if they had said they’d been mugged in Minneapolis I probably would have.

Strange and great and sometimes just freakin CREEPY. Somehow I came across a video today from YouTube, by Magibon. Magibon? Who is that? Well, just Google…and be prepared. The videos themselves aren’t that bad. A little strange for sure but nothing terrifying about them. A (what appears to be a twelve year old, but says she’s twenty-two) girl looks at the camera and on occasion says somthing in Japanese.

It certainly has that totally appealing to pedophiles feel to it. But seems harmless enough. The really terrifying things are the “fan” sites. There is this odd cult following that I just don’t get. This girl is probably a genuis though because I imagine as soon as there is a way to make money off this she will…I would. So I’ll throw a video up here to add to the hype…but be carfeul when you Google…as on of the sites will seriously give you nightmares…

She does however have the best eye-liner application skills ever…damn I wish I was that good.

Sherman and I were talking this morning, well discussing in firm tones, the possibility of vampire babies. I had mistakenly said vampire baby when I meant to say human vampire crossbreed baby. Sherman was certain such a thing didn’t exist and wasn’t a possibility. I assured him that yes indeed it was.

I win.…
